Career options in buy side

I am going for Columbia MAFN program this fall and am exploring various career options available in the buy side for FE graduates. I am particularly interested in investment research with respect to hedge funds or asset management firms, but am not sure what specific roles are realistically available for quants, and what the work might entail. Any help would be deeply appreciated.
