How to determine whether an investment firm has the hedge fund legal status?

I am conducting research on Hedge Funds. I have a hard time to determine whether investment firms have the legal statu of hedge fund or not based on the information provided on their website and the SEC website. Would you be able to help me with that? Thanks!
