the only familiarity i have with it is i've watched a few of ralph merkle's lectures, one specifically through singularity on nanotechnology. i forget what sort of affiliation he has with it, though. if you have time, you should watch that lecture as well - it's quite interesting.

Thanks, I'll check that out. I watched one guys presentation on 3D printers. Some of the stuff that is achievable now is frankly bloody impressive. The prosthetic limbs look liked something out of a scifi movie and they are dishwasher safe !
