Hey everyone! I wanted to share a bit about my background and the steps I'm taking toward transitioning into the quant finance field. I'm hoping to get some advice and hear your thoughts on my plan so far.
  • GPA: 3.02/4.0 in Software Engineering from a low rank university.
  • Experience: 5 years in managerial roles in commerce and logistics.
I've developed a strong interest in quantitative finance and am now preparing to make that shift.

Current Steps I’m Taking:

  1. C++ Course: Enrolled in the C++ QuantNet course and will proceed to take vba and python course outline on pre mfe courses page.
  2. Pre-MFE Program: Planning to apply to Baruch's Pre-MFE program during the next intake (assuming I get accepted).
  3. GRE: Scheduled for June.
  4. Additional Learning: Considering pursuing distance learning courses (e.g., online Master’s in Data Science, or Graduate Certificate/PG Diploma) to help bolster my academic profile before applying to a financial engineering program. The idea behind the online courses is to offset my lower GPA and show commitment to my studies, as well as demonstrate my ability to handle advanced technical content.

A Few Questions for the Community:

  1. Baruch Pre-MFE Program: If I successfully get enrolled, how many courses do most people usually take in one term? I want to plan my workload accordingly.
  2. Online Courses: Do you think enrolling in distance learning courses (like the ones I mentioned above) is necessary to strengthen my application or prepare for MFE programs? Would this really help offset my GPA?
  3. Math Prerequisites: I'm currently looking at NetMath by UIUC to brush up on my math skills. Does anyone here have experience with it or recommend other platforms to prepare?
  4. Chance of Getting into MFE Programs: Based on my profile (modest GPA and non-traditional background), I realize I might not get into top MFE programs. However, do you think I still have a shot at a slightly lower-tier program like Bayes if I complete all the steps I’ve outlined above (Pre-MFE, GRE, online master or grad cert)?
I know my path isn’t typical and my GPA isn’t ideal, but I’m committed to making the leap into quant finance. I’m looking for feedback on whether my strategy is solid, and any suggestions on additional steps I can take.

Any advice, tips, or insights would be hugely appreciated! Thanks in advance for your help!
