For a PhD student, how important is it to know C/C++? Is knowing Matlab+R enough? Have seen a lot of ads with C/C++ requirements.

C is the lingua franca of programming. It's something worth doing carefully and thoughtfully.

enough so if you respond to an ad that ask for C/C++ and you say you know it, you can answer any question they throw at you.
