I've seen a few people post that the returns from an MBA will likely greatly outweigh those of an MFE. Why is that? Are there any statistics indicating what the differential is?

No stats, but broadly speaking...

In the end, you earn big bucks by making deals and doing big business. Doing those deals means either being very innovative (entrepreneur side) or being able to handle people (management side). With a good idea/business model in place, the rest of business is more or less doing the same basic things over and over, but doing them excellently while managing business politics. It's not rocket science, but it does require a certain personality, one that quants usually don't fit.

MBA in a sense prepares you for that role. MFE prepares you to be a quant, which is a different niche. Graduating from a top business school means you'll average around 150-200k salary (up from around 80k ish) according to Forbes. Graduating from MFE I'd guess puts you at a job for 80-120k ish on average, although there's more chance you can hit it out of the park with something like a successful trading strategy, but as with anything like that, it's still rare.

Yike is right about how different courses prepare you for different work.

We can all learn things that can make us more valuable.

But the optimum is to be found where you are playing to your personal strengths. Any way of making money or achieving success by other measures is competitive. You need to find something that has the best opportunities for you.
