My skills of understanding how it works and writing the algorithm aren’t the best. But that doesn’t stop the patent being filed,” he says. “And when the money comes through I’ll hire the research people to work on getting it ridiculously accurate.”
you shouldn't. He implemented an algorithm to solve a problem. He probably doesn't understand the intrincacies of the problem but he came up with a solution. That's very admirable.

I agree completely. Though GP and evolutionary algorithms are not too difficult to grasp, the skill is to formulate your problem in a sensible way the algorithm can work and be trained with. How you represent the problem to the algorithm, potentially pre-treat the data and possibly tweak or constrain the algo itself (which may or may not also include some heuristic rules) to obtain a sensible solution is an undervalued skill.
