[UK] Masters Advice

Hi guys,

I am currently a 3rd year chemical engineer at the University of Birmingham (Averaging about 85% in all my modules), I have offers from Oxford for "MCF" and "Mathematical Modelling and Scientific Computing", is it possible for me to get into a quant position after these courses? If so, which course is superior? I am conflicted because I initially wanted to apply to a mathematical modelling course because I love that kind of thing but I hear MCF is better in respect to getting good jobs after graduating.

If anyone can answer my queries I'd be grateful.

if you cant get a quant position with a degree from oxford, you should be able to land something else.

Quant position is more likely with MCF. Quants interviews will focus on things you see in MCF . If you were to choose the modelling one, then you'd have to learnt the math finance stuff yourself in preparation for interviews, because you will be tested.

On the other hand, the modelling is £8k, and MCF is £27k. If you really want, you can do modelling, and attend MCF lectures to get an idea of math finance stuff. However, both courses are intense enough as it is without attending the other. So personally, I wouldn't recommend it.

I don't know many people from Modelling, but from what Ive heard, not many are there for Quant jobs.

MCF - You will get better reception & be more visible on the radar of Headhunters for Quant Fin

Mathematical Modelling and Scientific Computing - You will have crossover appeal across industries and wont be just restricted to just Quant Fin, extra maneuverability. I could easily imagine a role at Google.
