Georgia Tech QCF Admission Discussion

Georgia Tech's QCF Program is a professional, interdisciplinary graduate degree program.

I would rather not do an MFE at all. The MFE program works great for folks with fewer work experience and gives them a decent chance of landing a front office position. If a grad school is your only path to a front office position in US, i would rather look at quanty mba like Wharton/Booth which have pretty established channels towards funds. If you persist that an mba is out of question and mfe is the only rout, i would prefer Columbia. The location and name is significantly stronger and honestly, a difference of 20 or 30k is insignificant if you are willing to compromise your lifestyle for a couple of years after graduating. Of course, all of this is under the assumption that you are an equally competitive candidate for a buyside position.
I see. I also have an offer from Cornell Tech Masters in Computer science. Do you think that's better?

Just my two cents. I feel it's better to get a generic CS Math Degree than a super specialisation like FE, unless you're very certain about the future goals which FE can help you achieve.
With a CS/Math degree you can still get into Finance, I feel it gives you a lot more options.

I am certain I don't want to join the likes of Google or Facebook. I want to be an algorithmic trader (same thing I do now, but in the US)

Indian Engineering Undergrad (IIT/BITS) here with slightly under 1 year's full time work-ex. Have an admit from Georgia Tech as of now, and the dilemma is going there vs. waiting it out a year - for greener pastures. Although it's always a roll of the dice, I feel confident I should be able to get into one of the Top 5 programs next year.

1) How different is the opportunity set of jobs/internships available to GaTech graduates vs say.. a Columbia/CMU/Berkeley? (No specific inclination towards any job function)

2) Would the name of the college on the degree matter more as I progress in my career? Or is it more likely to be a function of my work, from there onwards?

Hi , I received an e-mail from Gatech on 4th April. They also asked me whether I am still interested. But 10 days past there’s no update. Could anyone tell me what does this mean? I got a chance? Should I wait? Thanks

Ga Tech graduates end up in NY as well. It's just that you have to work harder and network than you would do when you are in a college located in NY.
For the 2nd question, IMO once you have work experience for a couple of years, where you went to school doesn't matter.

According to the tracker someone got a reject yesterday.
I'm also waiting for my result, I interviewed two weeks back.
I know of another friend in the same situation.

And another friend who interviewed two weeks back and got their reject last week .
So I'm sure results are pending not sure how many of them are admits though ..

Hey Thanks for the post link , Transcending provided a detailed breakdown of comparing Columbia and Chicago but didn't really talk much about Gatech.
Given that both are ranked closely 9 & 10, and given Gatech is cheaper both tution and living.
The only thing that stands out is Chicago being a important Location advantage esp. for Buy side roles.

Anything else you wanna add ?

Yes location, brand name and curriculum as well. I don't think any school except Berkeley has such a coursework. If money is not the constraint go with Chicago
Gatech is very well reputed in US, but location disadvantage is there. Gatech placements are good but students there have to work very hard to get that.
Do you have any scholarship for Chicago?

Actually I'm in a different situation than yours. I've applied in the third round for chicago and already have my admit from gatech. I've dropped a note to Chicago asking for an early result.
I found the chicago curriculum to be less programming extensive than gatech.
Another broader question if I may ask, what would be more important if I want to get into a Quant Research role at HF Mathematical knowledge or the Programming ability? If that made sense

But Chicago has around 3-4 courses on programming out of 12. And yes their coursework is math heavy which I think is good for buy side roles
