Opportunities for quants outside of N.Y.

I'm a college math instructor who has dabbled in quantitative math(it was part of the coursework for my graduate degree). I'm stuck in Sacramento, California. Are there jobs for quants outside of wall street? Is it possible to work as a quant on a consultant or contract basis?

Yes and yes, but I do believe it is certainly less common.

San Francisco and LA would be your two main options in California for quant positions. I think UBS has a bunch of stuff in LA and BoA and bunch of other firms are in san fran.

Easiest way to find out
Look at MFE programs that are outside of the financial capital.

Look at UCB, UCLA, Stanford, USC and the numerous others (Hawaii, Minnesota, UNC, etc) and see where their graduates work.
