I'm sure many of QuantNet members have a 10+ years experience post MFE degree. I wonder if any of you guys have a personal investment portfolio that is appreciated enough that they are thinking of retirement in the next 5, 10 years?

next 5, 10 years??? no way... my horizon is at the age of 65 plus minus 5 years which is still around 30 years away... my goal is slight north of 5mm
i dont like the idea of super frugal and just scrape by

Tagging along this topic, I'm wondering what those of you working on quant funds/prop firms do with your personal investments? Do you follow simple mixes of index funds and bonds, or do you actively trade with certain strategies? For those doing the latter, do you adopt similar strategies as you've done in your funds/firms or something completely different?

My impression is that most established funds prohibit you from 'active trading'. You need to seek approval from compliance weeks in advance before you put on a trade, and the minimal holding period might not be to your liking.

That is correct. All the big firms have a compliance dept where you have to get approval for any personal trading activities. It may be easy to get an OK to buy and hold a blue chip stock. It may be another story if you want to short or any other complex trading.
This is why you may not see many people in the industry do much more than passive, buy and hold investment.

I'm curious to see your strategy to get to that 5M mark given your long horizon. I hope you got a bunch of TSLA stuffed somewhere.
